We often say: 'throw away that cheap supermarket or drugstore shaving soap or shaving foam and start using really good shaving soap<\/a> or shaving cream<\/a>!' A good shaving soap or shaving cream must do three things:<\/p>

  1. it produces a full and stable lather and stays moist for a long time, allowing the beard hairs to soften more and more;<\/li>
  2. it creates a thick fatty protective layer or glide film to protect the skin from the razor;<\/li>
  3. and the various nourishing oils and fats feed the skin, resulting in less shaving and skin irritation during or after shaving.<\/li> <\/ol>

    What is a bad shaving soap or shaving cream?<\/h2>

    Bad shaving products are strongly alkaline and do not produce a good lather. The lather dries out quickly and does not feel greasy. These products have a strong dehydrating effect. They do not sufficiently protect the skin, dry it out, damage it, and irritate it. The common supermarket and drugstore shaving products from well-known retail brands are very aggressive. Many men who use these products experience a dry, tight skin or a burning sensation after shaving. Many of these uninformed individuals think: 'this is normal, right?' Wrong!     What are the ingredients of shaving soap and shaving cream?<\/h2>

    All soaps consist of (vegetable or animal) oils and fats and a lye, such as potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. When you mix these substances together, you get a chemical reaction: the saponification process. Potassium hydroxide creates creamy shaving creams and sodium hydroxide creates hard shaving soaps. Just a fun fact in between: lyes are also used as paint strippers and drain cleaners. Shaving soaps and shaving creams are so-called superfat soaps. Less lye is used than is necessary to saponify all the oils and fats. The various commonly used fats contain a high concentration of unsaponifiable components, which means that after the saponification process, they remain as superfat in the shaving soap. This nourishes and cares for the skin.<\/p>

    Labels of shaving products always list the various ingredients of the product in question. The substances that are most prevalent in the article are listed first. The ingredients that are least present are therefore listed last. The most commonly used ingredients are water, oils, fats, fatty components, lyes, and glycerin.
