All you need to know about the safety razor

The safety razor is the forerunner of today's cartridge razors. In the early 1900s, Gillette received the patent for sw safety razor and the accompanying double edge razor. Because the safety razor became part of the standard equipment of the U.S. Army during World War I, the safety razor became a huge success worldwide. All over the world, billions of men shave with the safety razor.

6 reasons why you should buy a safety razor

  • Comfortable and smooth

99% of our customers who shave with the safety razor report that it shaves very comfortably, efficiently and smoothly. By now we would venture to say here that it shaves better, smoother, more comfortable and smoother than today's modern razors.

  • Saves money, economical shaving

Individual double edge blades cost an average of €0.25 each. Depending on the quality, the razor blade stays sharp for 3 to 7 shaves. Compared to the modern razor systems of the well-known retail brands, you are going to save a lot of money on an annual basis. So don't be a thief of your wallet and switch.

  • Less shaving irritations and ingrown hairs

You have far fewer shaving irritations, such as a chafing or burning sensation and ingrown beard hairs. Less is more. We always say here, "Your skin is not made for going over it with a blade." With multiblade razors, 3 to 5 blades scrape across your skin at the same time. This causes shaving irritation for many men. The safety razor involves one blade gliding over your skin.

  • Customized

The safety razor and its double edge blades are a worldwide universal shaving system. Super convenient. All different brands of razor blades fit any type of safety razor. Of course, the various brands of razor blades and safety razors have different shaving properties. This allows you to put together the right combination and match it to your skin and beard.

  • Hygiene

The 3 or 5 blades in the multiblade cartridge razors are very close together. As a result, dirt, soap residue and dander quickly gets in between and it is difficult to rinse and clean it out. The blades get clogged and dirty and don't get as smooth and comfortable a shave. And, of course, it's not hygienic. This obviously causes shaving and skin irritations. The double edge razor in the safety razor can easily be unscrewed and cleaned during and after shaving. If necessary, you can clean the razor after shaving, dry it and store it cleanly.

  • Durable and environmentally friendly

Finally, it is much more durable and environmentally friendly than modern disposable razor blades. The double edge blade consists only of metal. The modern cartridge blades usually consist of different materials, such as metal and plastic.

Most razor holders are made of durable materials, such as metal, wood and hard plastics. As a result, a holder often lasts an average of 10 years. This also allows you to maintain and clean the razor more easily.

Frequently asked questions

Deciding which safety razor to buy

Which safety razor should you buy?

Buying a safety razor is serious business. Choosing the right razor obviously starts with your way of shaving and whether you shave the entire face or just the contours of your beard. Of course, the type of skin and beard also determines which razor is best for you.

Safety razor with closed comb

A safety razor with a closed comb is the most common razor system and very popular with most wet shavers. They are suitable for light to normal beard growth and for sensitive or delicate skin. Due to the closed comb, the double edge razor blade is safely embedded and therefore shaves very efficiently, smoothly and comfortably.

Safety razor with open tooth comb

The safety razor with an open tooth comb shaves slightly more aggressively. Due to the teeth in the shaving head, the blade is slightly more open and closer to the skin. This system is more suitable for normal skin and stiff beard hair or firm beard growth.

Safety razor with butterfly closure

Do you want to change blades easily and smoothly? Then buy the safety razor with a butterfly clasp or twist-to-open clasp. At the bottom of the handle there is often a twist button. When you turn this, the top half of the razor head flips open. Then you can put the razor blade in there and clamp it. Razors with a butterfly closure are suitable for light to normal beard growth.

Safety razor with adjustable shaver head

The high-tech razors have an adjustable shaving head. This type can be adjusted to personal shaving technique. You can set the shaving characteristics of the razor: from mild, medium to aggressive. The rotary mechanism in the handle allows you to adjust the top half of the shaving head down or up. This makes the razor blade lie more or less open in the shaving head. If the blade lies less open, it shaves mildly. If you turn the handle, the top half of the shaver head comes up more. This causes the blade to lie more open and shave slightly more aggressively.

Type of handle of the safety razor

The standard length of the handle of most safety razor is about 8 cm. Because you hold the razor lightly and smoothly, this is the most common size. These razors are suitable for light and normal beard growth. Some razors are more robust, heavier and have a longer handle. These safety razors are more suitable for the normal to heavy beard.

The razor with a standard length handle is suitable for shaving beard contours.

Shaving with a safety razor

How should I shave with the safety razor?

Shaving with the double edge safety razor is not difficult. After one week you will have mastered it. If you use the following steps and technique, you will have a lifetime of fun with the safety razor.

Preparation

Good preparation is half the battle. Before shaving, cleanse the skin with a cleansing gel, for example. Always use lukewarm water and possibly a pre shave cream or oil. Of course, apply shaving cream to protect the skin and soften the beard hairs. Beard hairs are as hard as copper wire. The combination of water and shaving cream softens the hairs. This provides extra shaving comfort and ultimately a smooth shave.

Shaving technique

Hold the razor lightly and smoothly between thumb and forefinger at the top of the handle. Hold the razor at a 30-degree angle to the skin and let the razor do its work. Do not apply pressure to the skin. Shave with gentle strokes. Shave with the beard hairs as much as possible. If it is still not smooth enough, shave against the direction of beard growth. When shaving against the direction of hair growth, hold the razor with 2 or 3 fingers as close to the handle as possible. This will prevent you from applying too much pressure.

Shaving order

The order of shaving is, of course, personal. But usually you start at the sideburns. If you are right-handed, you start on the right. The left-handed among us start on the left. Next, you shave the cheeks from top to bottom. Then you shave the jawline and neck area, also from top to bottom. The toughest beard hairs are under the nose and around the chin. Finally, shave the chin and upper lip. Still not smooth enough? Reapply shaving cream and shave against the direction of hair growth.

Maintenance and Safety

After use, rinse the razor thoroughly. Carefully remove the double edge razor blade and clean it under running water. If necessary, dry the blade and put it back in the shaver head. Allow the blade to wash out or hang it in the accompanying razor holder. Do not pat the razor dry on a hard surface as this may damage the chrome coating. Then store it safely and out of the reach of children.
