The scents of cologne and perfume
All men's fragrances can be divided into five scent or olfactory families: fresh, floral, oriental, woody and fougere (woody). Each fragrance is structured like a pyramid. It starts first with the top notes. After a few minutes, you smell the middle notes. Finally, it is the base notes that stay smelling the longest on your skin.
The difference between an after shave, cologne and perfume
Aftershaves provide a fresh and clean feeling on the skin and are much weaker in scent than colognes or perfumes. An aftershave has the lowest percentage of fragrance ingredients (2% to 4%). The smell of an after shave diminishes or even disappears after a few minutes. Therefore, an after shave can be applied or splashed directly on freshly shaved skin.
A cologne contains more fragrance ingredients (5% to 10%) than an after shave. A cologne will stay smelling good for several hours. Over the course of the day, the cologne will smell much less present.
Compared to a cologne and aftershave, a perfume has the most fragrance. It contains the most concentrated amount of fragrance ingredients (10% to 20%). A perfume continues to smell and linger all day.
