All you need to know about Cologne and Men's Perfume

With a cologne or perfume you try to stand out as a man. So don't buy the fragrances of the big known brands. Use only unique and distinctive men's fragrances. For men, choosing the right cologne and men's perfume is more complex than for women. As a man, you naturally have to deal with using shaving and beard products. You naturally want the scent of your men's perfume to perfectly match the scents of your shaving soap, aftershave or beard oil. In addition, the time of day is important. For daytime during work, you don't want to use a perfume that is too heavy, preferring a light cologne. But for in the evening during a weekend date with a new friend, you prefer a nice sultry seductive fragrance. In autumn, on the other hand, warm or woody scents are popular. In summer, most men use a nice fresh perfume.

The scents of cologne and perfume

All men's fragrances can be divided into five scent or olfactory families: fresh, floral, oriental, woody and fougere (woody). Each fragrance is structured like a pyramid. It starts first with the top notes. After a few minutes, you smell the middle notes. Finally, it is the base notes that stay smelling the longest on your skin.

The difference between an after shave, cologne and perfume

Aftershaves provide a fresh and clean feeling on the skin and are much weaker in scent than colognes or perfumes. An aftershave has the lowest percentage of fragrance ingredients (2% to 4%). The smell of an after shave diminishes or even disappears after a few minutes. Therefore, an after shave can be applied or splashed directly on freshly shaved skin.

A cologne contains more fragrance ingredients (5% to 10%) than an after shave. A cologne will stay smelling good for several hours. Over the course of the day, the cologne will smell much less present.

Compared to a cologne and aftershave, a perfume has the most fragrance. It contains the most concentrated amount of fragrance ingredients (10% to 20%). A perfume continues to smell and linger all day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prefer to use my cologne or men's perfume

How do you use a cologne and men's perfume?

You use a cologne and perfume after shaving or after shave treatment. A cologne and perfume do not spray directly on freshly shaved skin. A small amount of cologne behind the ears in the neck area or on the wrists is sufficient. You should not rub the applied fragrance dry between the hands or wrists. One or two puffs, and that's it. A cologne and perfume develops. At first you may still smell the alcohol. After a few minutes, you get the scent as it will smell for the rest of the day.

An aftershave, cologne and perfume contain alcohol and fragrance ingredients. Never use alcohol-based shaving products if you have dry or sensitive skin.

Finding my scent

How do I determine my favorite cologne or perfume?

Determining the right scent is, of course, very tricky. What fragrance suits you is personal. When you are going to choose a cologne or perfume you should always ask yourself, "What do I like to smell like? Are you a lover of forest scents or do you like floral scents? Or do you like spicy exotic fragrances more? If the weather is warm then fresh citrus fragrances or light perfumes are pleasant. If it is Autumn then warm and woody fragrances are popular.

Because the scents of a cologne or perfume are constructed like a pyramid, you also notice that your perfume starts to smell different a few minutes after spraying it on. In the beginning, the alcohol also dominates. Alcohol evaporates quickly. Then the other fragrance notes appear. The pH or acidity of your skin also affects the development of fragrance.

Which perfume goes best with my shaving soap or beard oil?

Shaving and beard products are also scented or contain fragrance. After shaving or grooming the beard, it is nice if the scent of the cologne or perfume matches well with the scent of these grooming products. Choosing your perfume starts with your favorite shaving soap or beard oil. Using the five scent families, you can determine for yourself which scents match well.
